Starting a Podcast, Not Knowing How to Start a Podcast

Starting a podcast was simply a passion project for us, and we faced several challenges along the way. With my design skills, I had the challenge of creating a brand for the podcast. Luckily, Shianne and I had already come up with the name (Tip Top Tea Talk) which was actually the easy part, next was establishing the brand.

Who is Tip Top Tea Talk?

Just a couple friends who have alot of tea to talk about, so they started a podcast.

Phase One

Topic Research & Target Audience
What is the topic of this conference?
Anything and Everything Lego.
What is the purpose of this topic?
To highlight the creativity, education and  the value of  creating things from your imaginations through implications of Lego. As well as connecting people to others who share their interest in Lego.
Why does it matter?
This matters because Lego is the company to best implement plastic interlocking brick-built toys, and millions of people around the world know of Lego. It also matters because Lego can be for anyone and everyone, young or old; anyone can build with Lego
Who is the Target Audience for this Conference?
All fans of Lego, young and old. People who are also interested in learning more about Lego and seeing what can be made with Lego are also welcome.
How is this social group being affected by the topic and the changes of this topic?
People who are familiar with Lego would be interested in new projects or even job opportunities for Lego. Some may be interested in simply building anything they want or even seeing some of their favorite Lego characters come to life. Others may be interested in seeing what other people have made with Lego to truly understand that there are no limitations as to what can be made out of Lego.

What is Tip Top Tea Talk?

Our goal as a podcast is to create an environment similar to the comforting feeling of chatting with a friend over some tea or coffee.

Conversational

We want to ditch the scripts and make it feel and sound like we are having a genuine conversation with one another and our listeners. We are actually friends so why should we act any differently.

Chill

We want our listeners to laugh and enjoy our podcast. Keep our conversations light-hearted, fun and genuine.

Inclusive

We want as many of our listeners to get involved. Playing along with the games we play, submitting conversation topics or even appearing on the show as a guest.

Designing the Logo

When designing the logo, I wanted to make it more 'laid-back' but easy to understand. The cups being stacked but not touching was to evoke movement and catch the eye. The visual weight in the font of the name was intentional to make it easier to read. The simplicity of the letter forms makes it easy to manipulate the logo for some seasonal logo designs.

Spotify Covers

Spotify
Season 1
Making the first cover clean and simple for the podcast was my main goal. I wanted to make sure the name was clear and add a little tag to our social media account so people can check it out as well.
Summer Special
For this one-off episode special, I wanted to make a special cover for it, combining tea and summer. I thought an iced tea on the beach would be the perfect way to represent a relaxing setting to talk with someone like a friend or family member.
Season 2
I wanted to be a little more ambitious with the season 2 cover and at this time I was getting into Adobe Dimension. I combined several of the visual assets I made and items associated with tea all at a certain angle while adjusting lighting for the season 2 cover.

A Reflection

Although, none of us knew how to start a podcast, we made one and it was fun! I learned what it takes to get the podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts through research and I established a brand identity for the podcast with my design skills. I gained a better understanding at episode planning and writing, while also designing engaging content for social media posts.
